Wednesday July 1 recap — the wildest night of the round of 32
England wobbled for an hour against DR Congo, Belgium scored the latest winning goal in World Cup history, and ten-man USA reached the last 16 for the first time since 2002.

Wednesday July 1 and the night into Thursday — the wildest day of this round of 32. England spent over an hour on the edge against a heroic DR Congo. Belgium, two goals down to Senegal, snatched qualification at 120+5 — the latest winning goal ever scored at a World Cup. And the United States, down to ten men, held firm to give the host nation its first knockout-stage win since 2002.
England 2-1 DR Congo — Kane puts out the fire

For over an hour, the upset was on. Cipenga stunned England’s defence inside 7 minutes, and the Leopards clung to their dream behind a magnificent Mpasi in goal. Atlanta was holding its breath — and not the way anyone expected.
Then Tuchel changed his game. Gordon came off the bench and flipped everything: two assists for Kane, at 75’ and 86’. England’s captain, clinical as ever, set things right in eleven minutes.
3 key numbers:
- 59% possession for England — sterile for long stretches against the Congolese block.
- 4 shots on target to 1: Mpasi dealt with the rest.
- 7th minute — Cipenga’s opener, the jolt that set up the night.
Gunners spotlight: four Gunners on the pitch. Madueke, England’s liveliest attacker before making way for Saka at 61’. Rice started in midfield, Eze came on at 70’. All four move on — Mexico up next.
Belgium 3-2 Senegal (AET) — the latest goal in history
(Facts — sources: ESPN, FotMob, Footmercato.)
At the 85th minute, Senegal could touch the last 16. Diarra at 25’, Sarr at 51’: the Lions were ahead, sharper, more precise, and Lumen Field was starting to believe with them. The numbers backed them up — 3.54 xG to 1.80, this was Senegal’s match.
Then Belgium did what teams that don’t know how to die always do. Lukaku at 86’, Tielemans at 89’: three minutes to erase everything. Extra time settled nothing — until the penalty Tielemans buried at 120+5. Per ESPN, at 124 minutes and 44 seconds it is the latest winning goal ever scored at a World Cup.
3 key numbers:
- xG 3.54 to 1.80 for Senegal — football’s cruelty in one line.
- 19 shots apiece: a match that never picked a side.
- 120+5 — Tielemans’ penalty, straight into the history books.
Gunners spotlight: Leandro Trossard started and ran his flank until the 109th minute, setting up Tielemans’ headed equaliser at 89’ — a Gunner right at the heart of the wildest comeback of the round.
USA 2-0 Bosnia — down to ten, up to the last 16
(Facts — sources: ESPN, Footmercato.)
Santa Clara had waited since 2002 for a World Cup knockout win. And Balogun lived a night you couldn’t script — the opener right before half-time, then a red card fifteen minutes after the restart, his challenge upgraded by VAR. Per ESPN, no player had scored and been sent off in the same knockout match since Zidane in 2006.
Down to ten for half an hour, Pochettino’s side bent but never broke. At 82’, Tillman ended the argument with a free kick curled over the wall. Along the way, the USA also snapped a ten-game losing run against European opposition.
3 key numbers:
- 48% possession for the hosts — efficiency over aesthetics.
- 10 shots to 6 despite the numerical disadvantage.
- 82’ — Tillman’s free kick, the goal that set a stadium free.
Gunners spotlight: no current Gunner in this one — but a familiar London face: Balogun, Arsenal academy graduate, hero then villain of the night. Suspended, he will miss the last-16 tie against Belgium.

- England (last 16): face Mexico — Saka, Rice, Eze and Madueke against El Tri and their crowd. Four Gunners in one tie.
- Belgium (last 16): face the USA, Monday July 6, back at Seattle’s Lumen Field. Trossard
against the hosts — without the suspended Balogun.
- The left side of the bottom bracket is now complete; Spain–Austria, Portugal–Croatia and Switzerland–Algeria follow on Thursday.
The GG take
(Opinion.)
Some World Cup days feel like a summary of football itself, and this was one of them.
England showed both of their faces in a single game: an hour of laboured play against a side with nothing to lose, then eleven minutes of clinical management once Tuchel found the right lever. It isn’t reassuring — but it is effective, and in knockout football effectiveness forgives everything.
Belgium won a match they had lost. Talk about the Red Devils’ character all you want — it’s real — but don’t forget the other half of the story: that Senegal side deserved the last 16, and the numbers scream it. Football wasn’t fair at Lumen Field. It was unforgettable, which is a different thing.
And the USA? The perfect script to finally ignite their home World Cup: a goal, a red card, a ten-man fortress, a free kick to finish it. Nights like that bind a team to a country. Belgium have been warned — on Monday there will be more than eleven opponents out there.
On the Gunners front, five of ours made it through the night: the four Englishmen and Trossard. The bracket is turning red and white.
