Match report

It took Raya's save to win this one

We won at Sunderland after an hour of being poor, and Raya is the one who kept us in it. Konsa, who Brobbey ran ragged all night, ended up hauling Ballard down in the box, and Le Fée stepped up to turn the game. Raya went the right way and pushed it onto his own post. Bruno Guimarães, sent on by Arteta at the break, needed only the next two minutes to put us ahead, and Saka settled the rest in stoppage time.

Analysis & Arsenal focus
Konsa never got a grip on Brobbey
Brobbey got past Konsa and in behind him all game, and the penalty is simply where it finally cost us. With Saliba and Mosquera both out, Arteta has nobody else to put there, and it is showing now on the harder away trips. Raya wiped the slate tonight, and he will not do that every week.
The two changes at the break
Arteta took White and Lewis-Skelly off at half-time, which he almost never does when we have not conceded. Timber shut down the right side in his first real minutes since his summer operation, and Bruno Guimarães gave the midfield a presence it had been missing since kick-off. That is the second time this season a substitute has unlocked a game for us, after Tzolis in Naples.
Havertz wasted the two he got
Havertz had two clean chances before half-time and put neither of them away. Roefs tipped over his acrobatic effort, and on the other one he looked for the pass with the goal in front of him. We got away with it on Saturday because Raya and a substitute did his job for him, and that will not hold up across a season.

Xhaka wears the armband on the other side

Granit Xhaka leads Sunderland out tonight with the armband, at a club that turned down Chelsea's money to keep hold of him this summer. We know what this ground can do to us. Saka and then Trossard had put us in front here last November before Brobbey levelled it in the 94th minute. Régis Le Bris has warned his players that we arrive on a run, and he does it without Habib Diarra or Romaine Mundle. Saliba is still in the treatment room our end, though Timber has trained with the group all week and Arteta makes his call after the final session.
