The comparison
We take every league match and put it back against the same fixture a year ago, at the same ground. You can see at a glance where we picked points up, and where we left them behind.

We still have 33 fixtures to play, and we took 62 points from them last season.
How to read it
Every row is a league match we have already played. Our result this season sits on the left, the same fixture last season on the right, and between them what we gained or gave away. The curve adds those differences up as the season goes: it climbs when we take more points than we did before, it dips when we leave some behind.
We only compare what actually compares, so an away day goes against an away day. Winning at Villa Park and hosting Villa at the Emirates are two different nights out. As for the clubs coming up from the Championship, we never faced them last season: their row still shows, marked “promoted”, but it carries no weight in the running total.
We stick to the league here. The Champions League hands us new opponents every year and the cups depend on the draw, so there is nothing to put alongside them. The table covers 5 matches played and updates itself after every matchweek.
