Match report

Brighton punished us from distance

Five games, five wins, and the Amex stopped all of it in one afternoon. Gross buried one from twenty yards on the half-hour, and from then on we chased a side with no reason to give the ball back. Kostoulas had already forced a save out of Raya in the 7th minute, and he eventually found his way through right before the break. Arteta turned to Merino, Zubimendi, Eze and then Gyökeres, and none of them made Verbruggen work.

Analysis & Arsenal focus
The main takeaway
Hürzeler pushed his press onto our build-up and sent us back in front of his block, where there is nothing to play. His first two scorers struck from the space we left them, twenty yards out, with nobody stepping up to close it.
The back line without Saliba
Konsa and Gabriel have held the centre together since Saliba's back ruled him out, and Timber was coming back off a rest. On the third goal, Chema Andrés got up alone inside the six-yard box, and Raya's appeal for a foul went nowhere.
What this Saturday changes
The international break lands now, and we do not play again until Leeds at the Emirates on 10 October. Three weeks to get Saliba and Mosquera back on their feet, and for Gyökeres to work on that first league goal.

The league's best attack is waiting for us at the Amex

Fabian Hürzeler picks a side without Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson, with seven men in the treatment room, and Brighton have still put thirteen goals away in four league games. Nobody else in the division is close. On Wednesday his players went two goals down at Old Trafford and still won 3-2. Arteta gets Timber back after resting him at Ipswich on Tuesday, though Saliba stays out for weeks yet. Take three points on the south coast and we join Woolwich Arsenal, who won their first eight in 1903-04 and have had nobody alongside them since.
