File cooled: two Romano denials, no contact from Barcelona, Arteta is counting on him

Left without a centre-forward since Robert Lewandowski walked away as a free agent, and turned down by Atlético over Julián Álvarez, Barcelona are hunting a striker in the last fortnight of the window. Viktor Gyökeres's name surfaced on 17 August through Sport and El Chiringuito journalist Jose Álvarez, who said a move would come "in the next few hours". A day later it has not: Arsenal have taken no call, and nothing suggests the club is willing to sell a striker who scored 21 goals in his first season. No top-tier reporter has picked the story up.

1. 28/08 (morning)the file stays shut, despite one last noise out of Spain.

   ESPN reported on 27 August that Viktor Gyökeres was an unused substitute against Coventry, and noted that the Spanish press still floats him as a makeweight in an Atlético deal for Julián Álvarez. FourFourTwo, meanwhile, relayed a report describing "daily" conversations about a move to Barcelona.

   We are not moving the entry, and it is worth saying why. None of this is carried by a top-tier source, Fabrizio Romano has denied the Barcelona link twice, and Mikel Arteta keeps saying publicly that the Swede is staying. A player who is not picked is not automatically a player who is sold: with no bid on the table four days from the deadline, the entry stays COOLED.

2. 26/08 (evening)we are closing this one.

   The picture has not changed in a week: Fabrizio Romano denied twice, on 19 and 24 August, that Barcelona were pursuing Viktor Gyökeres; Arsenal were never contacted by the Catalan club; and the internal feeling reported by the same journalist is that the Swede stays, with Mikel Arteta happy to keep him. Five days from the deadline, no bid has been submitted and no replacement has been signed.

   A file that fades away without a bid or a negotiation is the textbook definition of COOLED in our scale, so that is where it goes. The entry is not deleted: if a club puts a real offer on the table before Monday night, it reopens.

3. 25/08 (evening)one more notch of noise, still no contact.

   Yahoo Sports relayed a report claiming Gyökeres wants to leave and is in "daily" conversations about an exit to Barcelona. In the same flow of reporting, a far more solid detail almost went unnoticed: Arsenal have had no discussions with Barcelona and have not even been contacted by the Catalan club. The Swede is still regarded as a key player, and it would take both a huge offer and progress on a replacement for the club's position to change. Sports Mole adds that he is only a Catalan fallback behind Lautaro Martínez.

   So we are moving neither the status nor the stage. Romano's 24 August denial stands, and an agent on a trip is not a negotiation.

4. 25/08 (morning)noise, not news.

   Gyökeres stayed on the bench without coming on in the 3-0 win over Coventry, only the fifth time he has not played since joining, and several relays (Goal, Yahoo Sports) report that his agent has been in Barcelona since Monday. Supporters read that as an imminent exit; we read nothing more into it. No top-tier source has picked any of it up, and Romano’s denial from the previous day still stands: Barcelona are not pursuing the Swede, and nothing is moving on a swap with Atlético. The entry does not move.

5. 24/08 (evening)a second denial in a week, covering both angles.

   Romano repeated on 24 August that Barcelona are not pursuing the Swedish striker and that there is nothing behind those rumours. On the Madrid angle, his late-July position has not shifted a word: "nothing is on track" for Gyökeres to join Atlético or to be included in a swap for Julián Álvarez, with Arsenal preferring to fund any arrival through a sale of Martinelli or Jesus.

   That last point is the one that matters tonight: when Romano discusses Arsenal's ability to afford Álvarez on 24 August, he cites a Martinelli departure to Al-Hilal — never a swap involving Gyökeres. The €80m or £85m plus the player packages relayed by SPORT and then by English aggregators therefore still have no top-tier backing.
