Official: Ezri Konsa signs a four-year deal at Arsenal and takes the number 15
Arsenal announced Ezri Konsa's arrival from Aston Villa on 21 August. A four-year contract with an option for a fifth, the number 15 shirt, and £51m plus £4m in add-ons according to David Ornstein. The England defender is not in the squad against Coventry; his debut is expected on 31 August, at Villa Park.
Six weeks following this file, two of them spent reading the same sentence: Arsenal at around £40m, Aston Villa refusing to come down from £60m. On Friday 21 August, Arsenal published the announcement. Ezri Konsa is a Gunner.
What is confirmed
The club announced it on arsenal.com: the 28-year-old England defender joins from Aston Villa on a four-year contract, with an option for a further year. He will wear the number 15.
Arsenal never disclose fees, but David Ornstein gave them on the day: £51m, plus £4m in add-ons. FootballTransfers carry the same figure in euros, €60m plus roughly €5m in add-ons, and both Goal and Sky Sports round the total to around £55m. Three independent outlets, one figure, and a source who carries real authority on Arsenal business.
Sporting director Andrea Berta hailed “a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers”, stressing his ability to play centrally and at right-back. Konsa kept it simpler: “I’m hungry to win and that’s what I’m here for.”
He leaves Villa Park after seven seasons and 286 appearances, with a Europa League winner’s medal and a World Cup bronze with England.
Why this signing, and why now
On 23 July, Arsenal announced that William Saliba would be out for an extended spell with a back problem. Jurriën Timber was already sidelined. In three lines of a medical bulletin, centre-back went from the best-stocked position in the squad to the most exposed one, a month out from the restart.
Konsa had been identified since July, before Saliba’s injury. The profile fitted: Premier League experience, the ability to cover centrally and on the right, and two years left on his Villa deal, which gave Arsenal something to work with in the negotiation. Jarell Quansah served as an alternative for a fortnight, never as a priority.
The breakthrough came on 19 August. Fabrizio Romano posted his “here we go”, Sky Sports and ESPN confirmed it on their own reporting, the medical took place the next day, and the announcement landed the day after that. In between, OneFootball reported that Josh Kroenke had personally stepped in to close out the negotiation.
What still has to play out
Konsa does not play tonight against Coventry City, and on that point the accounts differ. The Evening Standard and Sky Sports wrote on Wednesday that the registration deadline for the opening weekend would not be met. Goal instead point to the four weeks off Villa granted him after the World Cup. Both explanations hold up, they do not contradict each other, and neither has been confirmed by the club. What is certain is that he has not played a minute of pre-season.
Goal expect his debut on 31 August. That night, Arsenal travel to Villa Park.

Our take
This is the least glamorous signing of the summer and probably the most useful one. You do not sign Konsa to win the window: you sign him because you are opening a title defence with two centre-backs in the treatment room, and you need somebody who can play Premier League football next week with no bedding-in period.
The one genuine reservation is the timing. A player with no pre-season behind him, coming off a World Cup, thrown into the August schedule: that asks for patience, and Arteta will not have much of it if Gabriel takes a knock. But set against improvising a back line for six weeks, the choice made itself.
Fifth signing of the summer, after Bruno Guimarães, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapié and Illan Meslier. And there are ten days of the window left.
