Match report
A trophy settled in twenty-three seconds
Twenty-three seconds were enough. We had barely settled when Calafiori was already celebrating in front of our own end, and the game never turned any other way. Tzolis found Havertz before the break, then Odegaard three minutes after the restart, and City never looked like knowing where to come back from. On his first competitive game, Maresca watched the evening slip away without his players ever getting a grip on it. It is the first trophy of the season, and if you were looking for a clue about what this side can do, you just got one.

Analysis & Arsenal focus

A trophy in Cardiff, and a City without Guardiola
We open the season in Wales, under a closed roof, and there is already a trophy on the table. We walked away empty-handed the last two times we met City, at Wembley in the Carabao final and then at the Etihad in the spring, so this one lands at a good moment. Maresca takes charge of his first competitive game since Guardiola left, and he does it without Rodri, which leaves a sizeable hole in midfield. Arteta confirmed on Saturday that Rice, Saka and Zubimendi are available again, and that changes a great deal after a laboured pre-season.
