Match report

Ødegaard's left foot is enough at the Maradona

We bossed the ball for an hour and a quarter without scoring, and at the Maradona those nights rarely end well. Merino had a diving header pushed away from point-blank range and Hincapié skied his from six yards, while Napoli sat back and waited for the counter. Tzolis came on in the 66th minute, and it was him who fed Ødegaard on the edge of the box for a curling left-footed strike that went in off the inside of the post. Behind them, Konsa gave Højlund nothing all night, and Raya kept his fourth clean sheet in five competitive games.

Analysis & Arsenal focus
The left foot in the house
Ødegaard now has four goals in five appearances this season, and not one of them looks like luck. He drifts inside and waits, sometimes longer than our nerves can take, for the shooting lane to open. Arteta has finally given him back the position where he hurts teams most.
Konsa held the fort
With Saliba and Mosquera out, we were wondering who would partner Gabriel in a stadium like that. Konsa spent the night wearing Højlund down, and the Dane went off without touching a dangerous ball. After the goal, that is the best news of the night.
Up front, it is still jammed
Gyökeres never got into the game at the Maradona and Madueke missed the counter that would have killed it. Meret produced the save of his night from Merino before pulling up, and his replacement pushed away another chance late on. One day we will meet a side like that on a night without Ødegaard.
Read the pre-match build-up

Three months on from Budapest, Europe starts again

Our last Champions League match was the Budapest final and that shootout against PSG. We pick it back up in Naples, in a stadium that has never handed anything to anyone. Arteta still goes without Saliba and without Mosquera, but that has been the case for three games now and the defence has conceded once in four competitive matches. Timber did travel, and he has not set foot on a pitch since his summer operation. Napoli turn up in poor shape themselves, twelfth in Serie A after two defeats, with Allegri still hunting for his team since Conte walked away. But a side full of doubt in that stadium will catch you out, and one De Bruyne pass is enough to tip the night over.
