Official: Ezri Konsa is an Arsenal player

William Saliba's back injury, announced on 23 July for an extended spell, made a centre-back Arsenal's priority, with Jurriën Timber also sidelined. Ezri Konsa, 28, had been the leading option since July: Premier League experience, able to play centrally or at right-back, two years left on his Villa Park deal. After a fortnight stuck £20m apart, the clubs agreed terms on 19 August, the medical took place on the 20th, and Arsenal announced the deal on 21 August. Konsa signs for four years with an option for a fifth, takes the number 15 shirt, and becomes Arsenal's fifth signing of the summer after Bruno Guimarães, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapié and Illan Meslier.

1. OFFICIAL — 21 August 2026. Arsenal published the announcement late in the morning: Ezri Konsa joins from Aston Villa. The club does not disclose figures, as ever; David Ornstein reports £51m plus £4m in add-ons, while Goal and Sky Sports round the total to around £55m. The contract runs for four years, with an option for a fifth. The England defender will wear the number 15 shirt.

   Sporting director Andrea Berta hailed "a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League's most consistent performers", stressing his versatility between centre-back and right-back. Konsa summed up his move in one line: "I'm hungry to win and that's what I'm here for."

   What is settled: the transfer, the fee as reported by Ornstein, the contract length, the shirt number. Less settled: his immediate availability. Konsa is not in the squad for Friday night's league opener against Coventry City, and the reasons given differ from outlet to outlet — the Evening Standard and Sky pointed to a registration deadline that was missed, while Goal cites the four weeks off he was granted after the World Cup, where he took bronze with England. He has not played a single pre-season match. Goal expect his debut on 31 August, and the fixture list has a sense of humour: that night, Arsenal play at Villa Park.
